The Monzi farmers are waiting to greet you once again at the Monzi Club situated in the village of Monzi, half way between the town of Mtubatuba and the coastal resort of St Lucia. This area lies on the southern perimeter of the new World Heritage Site of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, and is the venue for the 5th race and final Series Prize Giving in the Bell Big 5 Series, the Monzi Hippo Challenge.

With much work having been done and input from our riders over the past few years, this race has sections that are certain to both challenge and reward riders of all skill levels. This year the Monzi team have tweaked the 2016 route, and again have produced a track that will be a delight especially for the rider who hasn't quite developed those climbing skills, and a perfect ride for the whole family through the country side. As there are no serious hills, there are also no series descents and therefore be prepared for those legs to work most of the time.

Being a comparatively fast track, for the race snakes and the riders chasing a position in the Bell Big 5 Series, the Monzi Hippo Challenge race provides the perfect opportunity to improve your overall time. Leave this one out and you may be saddened to see your rivals leaping ahead of you with an improved overall average time.

The story of Monzi is a romance spanning the lives of three generations that tamed the floodplains of the Umfolozi river and infused a once largely inaccessible piece of land with their enterprising and adventurous spirit. It is this spirit of adventure which has motivated the track design as it is set alongside the Monzi flats through the sugar cane fields, timber plantations and macadamia orchards. The track also offers some very rideable single track through the southern part of the Futululu Forest section of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park.

The track also traverses sections of the golf course which winds through a series of coastal lowland forests, with some impressive examples of trees such as Flatcrown, Waterberry, Hard Pear and Natal Mahogany, amongst others. The tree-tops are home to troops of vervet monkeys and the rare Msimango monkey. Red Duiker, mongoose and the occasional Bush-buck might be seen creeping through the undergrowth.

This year’s 10km route stays within the boundaries of the Monzi Village and is designed to be a fun race aimed at encouraging the next generation's 50km entrants to begin their riding careers. Smaller kids or the unfit parents are encouraged to participate in this race which also offers a 5km option for those less serious riders.

The overall day promises to be a fun family time for all involved. Whether you are the cyclist in the family, or the family cheerleader, you are sure to find something at the Monzi Hippo Race that tickles your fancy. We are extremely proud of what we have achieved as a small community and invite you to visit and see for yourself what can be achieved with minimum expense and much community co-operation. We look forward to seeing you all there once again..
